The piece was inspired by an original collage created by Rory Morrison (@strangebouquets), which served as the conceptual foundation for the work. Rather than painting directly onto the collage, I reinterpreted the composition through paint—translating its visual language into a fully realized, hand-painted work while expanding upon it with additional symbolic elements. Building upon the original design, I introduced new layers of flora, serpent form, butterfly imagery, and energetic color fields, weaving themes of rebirth, intuition, and evolution throughout the portrait. The divided facial structure reflects the multifaceted nature of selfhood: instinct and intellect, softness and strength, shadow and radiance existing in balance. Surrounding it are plant medicines traditionally used in ceremonial practices by tribes throughout Southern California and Mexico, woven together in a living halo of petals, cactus forms, blossoms, and sacred botanicals. Rather than presenting these plants as isolated forms, Entheogens arranges them into a unified cosmology — honoring them as ancestral technologies of healing, vision, and communion with the natural world. The warm desert palette — sun-washed corals, sage greens, muted blues, and soft creams — echoes the landscapes where many of these traditions were born. The central eye does not dominate; it witnesses. It represents the state of awareness cultivated in ceremony: clarity, remembrance, and the dissolving of separation. The word entheogen translates to “generating the divine within.” This piece honors the sacred relationship between land, lineage, and consciousness — and the responsibility that accompanies working with plant teachers.
